A top arvo's sailing was had at Dobroyd Aquatic Club on  Wednesday the 13th of January, 2010.  It was C-Rig conditions along with torrential rain for some of the afternoon (see photo at left) . More photos in the gallery section.

9th of January, 2010

The 9th of January, 2010 saw the first sail of the year for the SMYS. Albeit the extreme heat of a 40 Deg C day was a bit hard to take there was still a good showing of boats and skippers during what is still for many the holiday period.

Note: With the hot days of summer upon us we may consider moving the start line a little to the East so it lines up with the shade of the tree we all sat under last Saturday.

Of note was Bill Shannons new IOM, a Bantock Kite which sailed very well on it's forst outign to Putney. Andrew Curling's Thundertiger Victoria had another small boat playmate in the form of Rob Primrose's 750mm Minimumm which stole the first few mixed fleet handicap races.

It was also nice to see Graham Rochester and John Pellicano coming down for a visit and talking about their possible new purchases, Grahaqm is thinking about a lovley near vintage style cruising A Class for a bit of mixed handicap and general cruising work while John is getting soem new RX gear for his current fleet of boats etc...

Another noteworthy item was the launchin g of Norm Fennel's new Soling One Meter AUS116. After an initial tune up this boat performed flawlessly and went on to win against the other Soling's on the day.

Also nice to see that all Sarah Sargents work sailing with her dad has started to pay off in the form of very consistant sailing.

I managed to have a chat with most of the skippers either during or after the days sailing regarding the future direction of the club and it was unanimous that all would like to see the club stay as a Mixed Fleet Handicap RC Sailing Club with perhaps every now and then a few scratch race events such as the ANZAC Cup (see Latest News articles NSWRYA website for more details. Skippers are still free to enter any other Regatta as they wish and will be given encouragment and support to do so if required.

Photos of todays sailing are to the right of this text ans some more will be added to the Gallery Page soon.

Happy Sailing For 2010

After a number of weather and scheduling related delays Round 5 (Final Round) of the ANZAC Cup will be sailed at the Dobroyd RC Laser Club, Dobroyd Aquatic Centre, Henley Marine Drive,Rodd Point on Saturday the 31st of October, 2009. First Race is scheduled to start at 1pm so plan to arrive a bit earlier so we can get rigged up and sort out any radio frequency clashes prior to the 1st race (pack a few spare RC Crystals as required).

26th of September, 2009

Saturday the 26th of September saw round 5 of the ANZAC Cup sailed in heavy conditions at the Dobroyd RC Laser Club, Rodd Point. Only one race was held and this was abandoned due to the extreme wind speed with gusts of up to 49 km/h. 5 boats crossed the start line for the beginning of the first race but shortly after this the heavy westerly breeze increased somewhat making it almost impossible to bear away at the windward mark, this saw Ronald Notter’s boat AUS62 White Spider head off on one the longest and straightest beats to windward that most of us had ever witnessed. Paul Derwent hopped into the retrieval boat and chased down Ron’s boat catching it just before it ran aground on the western side of Leichardt Bay. Shortly after this the first race was abandoned as Graham McKay, John Bartram and Andrew Curling attempted to make ground to windward and cross the finish line.

Once the boats were retrieved (remarkably all in one piece with no breakages) we all adjourned to the clubhouse for afternoon snacks and tall stories of recent sailing achievements.

Round 5 of the ANZAC Cup will be re run within the next few weeks.

Gentleman sailor Norm Fennell graced us with his presence when he dropped in to sail his 1.5 metre class yacht. Photos of Norm's smallest Yacht and it's fantastic build quality can be seen on the right of this page. There are a few more pictures of Norm's boat in action with the SMYS Soling One Meter Fleet on the Gallery Page. Despite the monstrous size of Norm's 1.5 there were a few races were the Soling's held their own all the way to dead heat finishes in the light conditions.

The Admin page has also been amended to incorporate blank copies of the SMYS Scratch and Handicap Scoring Sheets.

The Soling Page has had a building article, modified gooseneck article and some photos of repairing a broken rudder shaft added.

The IOM page has had a weight budget document added for those of you who are building their own IOM's or just want to check the various weights of your current IOM.
